This week’s installment of Adventures of the Bass Player is all about strings. Not just the ones you play on but also about attachments.
First, BASS STRINGS ARE EXPENSIVE!!! I have tried many different ones—cheap, expensive, medium, light, heavy, and extra heavy. I used GHS Boomers for along time because they we good and cheap. I used Elixrs because they we good and expensive. A thought on both—I ended up not liking either in the long run.
I play a Lakland bass so I gave them a try in the string department, they are truly the best strings I have ever used and they are affordable- right there with GHS in price and as good as Elixrs.
Now onto the other strings:
Growing up I was taught you are who you hang with; in other words, you will get a rep by who you are hanging out with. I hung out with a diverse group of people. I had friends who were jocks, rockers, cheerleaders, ASB, dopers, tokers and the midnight smokers. You name it, I hung out with them.
I got caught getting high, drinking and all that goes with it, and before you think it was with the rockers, dopers and the tokers, YOU ARE WRONG!!! I got into more trouble with the jocks, ASB and cheerleaders. They were big trouble, in every way.
I got into music to get away from such heavy partying, well, that didn’t work either. The bands that I played in were full of the jocks who liked music more. So I was who I hung with.
Fights were abundant, I think one of my bands could have taken just about any gang out there, they were scary.
We all have a past that we can be proud of and learn from, my past was alright, my parents were great, I didn’t end up with a jail record, that in it’s self was a miracle, I don’t have a DUI on my record, one of the few of my group that doesn’t have one.
So, am I who I hang with? Let’s look at today—I hang out with music people who are willing to give up everything for Christ, are passionate about how they serve God and their church, and will die for the One who died for us.
I like that group more, and I KNOW they can take on anyone because we have the BIGGEST GUY in our group—GOD.
Bass players are supporters who also have to be leaders behind the scene, we don’t get solo’s, we don’t start many songs, kids growing up want to be the lead singer or lead guitar player. Well, no one is perfect.
Bass Players are the balance.
Strings are important, remember where they are attached.

Strings are crucial but so is the instrument. You should do a post on the different instruments you've had. Short versus long necks, single coils versus humbuckers. Good post.
